This 1964 midcentury modern home need strategic exterior repairs of its built landscape features and exterior envelope. While addressing those concerns, we also had the opportunity to revitalize the usefulness of the home. The front patio was carefully reworked, seamlessly extending into the landscape to craft a highly functional and comfortable outdoor living space. Using delicate wood fencing and clean concrete walls, we struck a balance between interior privacy and a permeable connection with the neighborhood. The wood screen system serves as fencing, guardrail, and storage screening, maintaining a consistent material language throughout the exterior.
In addition, an upgraded exterior siding system was installed on the weathered portions of the house. With the siding removed, Rock Wool exterior insulation was added along with a rainscreen, and new metal siding. The old single-pane aluminum windows were replaced with new thermally-broken aluminum windows that dramatically improved performance, but kept historic design language.
In the end, our intervention not only extended the lifespan of this iconic home by repairing failing systems, but also created a vastly improved exterior space. Now, the dream of open door summers and an indoor/outdoor lifestyle is possible with this revitalized home.
