PADRE CANYON
High in the Mojave desert, five rectangular volumes converge together creating a range of spaces from expansive gathering areas to small spaces for solitude. The overlay of these volumes are closely coordinated with programmatic adjacencies and provide spatial nuance through the variation of angles. The surrounding peaks and cliffs exert a gravitational pull on the layout, inspiring the office wing and primary suite wing to flank the central volume. Together, they hug towards a panoramic desert reserve. Glazing in the central volume expands to become an entire wall that attempts to capture the expansive views. The resultant outdoor spaces between the clustered volumes become a variety of courtyards. Apart from the consolidated windows, the outside of the house is hermetic, reacting to the severity of the harsh desert environment. As a result, the interior becomes a restful sanctuary within in the high desert.
